Rule 24 requires the towing vessel to exhibit three masthead lights when pulling a tow in excess of 200 meters instead of the lights proscribed in rule 23. The aft masthead is optional for vessels less than 50 meters in length.

What requires the one light aft in this questions?

Why one masthead light aft?
st stutzmaj · Apr 26, 2017
It should probably read, "...which lights may she exhibit."

(ii) sidelights;
(iii) a sternlight;
(iv) a towing light in a vertical line above the sternlight; and

DEC 2019 and the question and answer are still incorrect. Which light(s) is she required to exhibit? The aft light is "optional" and therefore NOT required.

Disregard my previous comment. I've come to learn to trust the USCG has it right!
