1. A sail parallel to the coast on the leeward side of land studying the terrain for possible sites
2. B drift landward on the sea anchor and when in the surf row out to safe water
3. C sail parallel to the coast on the windward side of land studying the terrain for possible sites
4. D make a series of maneuvers advancing into land and turning out once in the surf
