Scratch paper is allowed during your exam. Tare out two pieces of paper and fold them into the shape of ships. Mark the light colors and arcs. Set them on the table as described by the questions. Ding, the answer is then very clear.

Just remember 0-90-180-270-359 on your compass rose. 235 would be on your port quarter.

a sidelight has an arc of 112.5 degrees so anything beyond (360-112.5 or 000+112.5) would be overtaking.

Add 180 + 67.5 and it's still within the arc of visibility of the stern light so it's overtaking.
