Appreciably means considerably. There is not a risk of collision when the bearing is changing appreciably. There is no correct answer for this question.

I'm going to have to agree.

These answers need help. (B) works, with Rule #7, IF it states "when approaching a VERY LARGE VESSEL".
As stated here; (A) is the best possible answer, According to RULE #2: "Nothing in these rules shall exonerate ANY Vessel. DUE REGARD shall be had to ALL DANGERS OF NAVIGATION AND COLLISION. Which may make a departure from these rules NECESSARY TO AVOID IMMEDIATE DANGER". Obviously, the point of this set of answers is to highlight "May" over "Must & Always".

Badly worded question. The compass bearing may change appreciably when approaching a very large vessel but that is not said.

Disagree...the key word here is "may" exist. B is correct here. A) is too general of a statement for a must, considering that "must not" is even generally true--notwithstanding Rule#7 catch all.

When risk of collision exists... " The stand on vessel MUST change course when action by the give way vessel alone cannot avoid a collision. If the circumstances of the case admit, the stand on vessel should avoid an alteration of course to port, if there is a vessel on her port side."

Also, "Risk of collision exists if the compass bearing to an approaching vessel does NOT change appreciably." That's the direct opposite of the "correct" answer in this question.

Every vessel is supposed to take action if there's a risk of collision. If there's a risk of collision, then the stand on vessel must take appropriate action; and when the bearing "does NOT change appreciably" is when there is a risk of collision.

That is a BOGUS question. If the bearing changes aft then you will be clear of a collision.
