because the white lights are on the same mast, if it was a power driven vessel it would be on two separated masts.

I for one cannot discern if these lights are on the same or two separate masts from this illustration. B & D are possible answers. Then, what about a fishing vessel in close proximity to other fishing vessels perhaps? Questions like these I recommend to just skip.

If you can see two masthead lights but only one sidelight, the two masthead lights must be on the same mast; otherwise there would be some separation. WARNING- If you skip these questions you not know how to decipher the questions during your exam. These are all real questions. Yes, the USCG updated questions and stopped publishing the questions, but I don't think they are working hared to make better questions.
